My jaw dropped when I saw Tom and his mom, Evelyn, settling into their first-class seats, sipping on orange juice and waving goodbye at us while the kids and I were squished into economy.

After all the planning for this trip, it felt like a betrayal. I glanced at Emma and Jacob, who were already restless and grumpy, as I fumed silently.

I knew right then I had to take revenge to make sure this never happened again. Little did Tom know, my idea to teach him a lesson would make him wish he'd never betrayed me like this.

Awaiting the boarding gate

Just half an hour ago, before I knew what Tom had done, we'd hurried to the boarding gate, Tom's impatience spurring me along.

I didn't understand the rush as we joined the long line and Emma asked me, 'Why are we running, Mom?' struggling to keep up.

I shrugged, realizing that I had no idea what to tell her. 'Daddy is just excited to get on that plane. Aren't you?' I finally said with a smile.

Whispering in the queue

As we stood in line, I noticed Evelyn leaning in to whisper something to Tom, who nodded in agreement.

The kids shuffled impatiently as the line crept forward. 'What's taking so long?' Jacob grumbled, tugging at his sister's hand.

'Not much longer,' I reassured, eager to get seated. Watching Tom and his mom whisper, I felt a twinge of irritation, but I focused on keeping the kids entertained.

It was almost time for boarding anyway.

Disappearing in the boarding queue

However, before I knew it, Tom and Evelyn had disappeared ahead of us in the boarding queue. I was left juggling Emma's bag and holding Jacob's hand.

'Where'd Dad go?' Emma asked, peering down the line. I gave a quick, confused answer, 'He's waiting for us inside, honey.

' We continued to struggle with our things, slipping into the line with half the ease Tom and Evelyn had shown. 'We got this,' I assured the kids.

Help with the bags

I helped Emma with her suitcase while keeping a firm grip on Jacob's small hand. We trudged forward. 'Mom, are we almost there?

' Emma questioned, her curiosity shining through. 'Almost, sweetie,' I replied. As we finally boarded, I glanced around, but Tom was nowhere to be seen.

We maneuvered through the narrow aisle, determined to find our seats and settle in this seemingly never-ending shuffle.
